Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade has announced that car plates and driver's license validity will be extended to five years. In a report by GMA News Online published September 20, Tugade said that he has recently signed a Department Order which will extend the validity of car plates and driver's license to five years from three years. "Last night I signed a Department Order which will extend the validity of car plates and driver's license to five years from three years," Tugade said during the Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC) Transportation forum. The department's plan for next year is for cars to come with plates when sold to consumers. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has rejected proposals to allow carpooling vehicles coordinated through ride-sharing and mobility apps on the EDSA Busway, citing concerns that opening the dedicated lane to private vehicles would degrade the performance of Metro Manila’s primary mass transit corridor. DOTr officials emphasized that while carpooling platforms are often promoted as smart mobility solutions, they function best on general road networks, not on dedicated transit corridors. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed major e-commerce platforms to take down unauthorized Beep card listings. In a letter dated August 26, the DOTr said that selling Beep cards online without approval is illegal.
