DOTr orders e-commerce platforms to remove illegal Beep card listings

Listen to article

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed major e-commerce platforms to take down unauthorized Beep card listings. The order was sent to Carousell, Lazada, Meta Philippines, Shopee, and TikTok.

This follows the sellers’ continued posting of the cards online despite a warning issued on August 13. In a letter dated August 26, the DOTr said that selling Beep cards online without approval is illegal.

Platforms that allow these listings to stay up are liable to face legal action. The agency gave a deadline until August 31 to remove all active posts and develop means of blocking future ones.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the move targets hoarders and resellers, adding that buying more than two cards is considered hoarding. Moreover, CCTV cameras will also be installed at train stations to monitor possible violations.

Earlier this week, online seller Cateleen Ann Dumondong Manalo was arrested in an entrapment operation. She was found with 50 Beep cards priced at ₱200 each, well above the official ₱30 price.

Manalo is currently facing charges under the Access Devices Regulation Act and the Cybercrime Prevention Act. The DOTr confirmed that 300,000 new Beep cards have been delivered to train stations to address supply issues.

The agency will continue monitoring online platforms and warn that non-compliant companies will be held responsible.
