In a decisive move to combat cybercrime and ensure public safety, Globe Telecom has reinforced its commitment to fully cooperate with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other law enforcement agencies. Globe's statement also follows disturbing reports from the PNP about the discovery of hundreds of unregistered SIM cards in the hands of alleged criminal syndicates. "The SIM Registration Act is a foundational step to thwart fraudsters and requires a multi-pronged approach with robust law enforcement" said Froilan Castelo, Globe Group General Counsel, during a Senate hearing chaired by Sen. Globe further cautioned the public against selling registered SIM cards or bulk-registering SIM cards under their names for a fee, as these acts could be exploited for illegal activities, rendering them complicit. Reiterating its readiness to work closely with governmental bodies, Globe lauded the effectiveness of the recent raids that led to the seizure of pre-registered SIMs and the subsequent arrest of suspects. In response to the end of the SIM registration period on July 25, 2023, and a brief grace period ending on July 30, Globe promptly deactivated all unregistered SIM cards. Globe has also introduced a #StopSpam portal for customers to report spam and scam messages and plans to collaborate with the PNP to establish a similar reporting system.
