Renewable energy company Solar Philippines has proposed a 24/7 power for Php2.99 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) to Meralco which challenges First NatGas’ price proposal from its 414 MW San Gabriel gas power plant in Batangas. Solar Philippines stated that the offered rate would allow consumers to save over 30% or around Php75 billion per annum compared to Meralco's average generation rate of Php4.74 per kwh in the past three months. “Meralco can save an average of 30 percent thanks to advances in solar and battery storage,” said Solar Philippines president Leandro Leviste. The offer will allow Meralco to decide whether to re-bid under the same terms or amend it to allow other technologies to compete on the basis of costs. Solar Philippines recently built its first MW-scale Solar-Battery Micro-Grid in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro to give 24/7 reliable power. Meralco has launched in May its biggest renewable energy sources project to date, BulacanSol — a 50-MW solar farm in San Miguel, Bulacan. BulacanSol, built by MGen Renewable Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Meralco, started delivering around 50MW to the Luzon Grid in mid-May, a few months off schedule due to work delays caused by weather disturbances and lockdowns due to the pandemic. Espinosa said during a shareholders annual general meeting that the company hopes that renewable sources such as solar and wind would total 3,000 megawatts in the company’s energy mix in five to seven years.
