Sony has announced the upcoming release of its new image sensor for smartphones, sporting 48 effective megapixels and ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8um - the Sony IMX586. Sony says that the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor has the world's first 0.8 um ultra-compact pixel size which allowed them to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type unit. In addition, the Sony IMX586 is capable of shooting 4K resolution at 90fps, 1080p in 240fps, and 720p in 480fps (w/ crop).
