Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be available only in digital format, ending the production of physical disc editions for future titles. According to Sony, the decision reflects the growing preference for digital game purchases. Sony also shared that physical game discs accounted for only 5% of its game software revenue during the fiscal year that ended in March, while digital sales made up the majority of purchases. Despite ending disc production for future releases, Sony said players will still be able to purchase new games through the PlayStation Store or participating retailers that sell digital game codes. Sony said the transition is part of its effort to adapt to changing consumer habits and the growing demand for digital content.
