South Korea has made history by becoming the first country in the world to officially enforce a comprehensive law on artificial intelligence safety. Big global tech firms like OpenAI and Google are required to assign local representatives in South Korea. Amazon’s game streaming platform, Twitch, has announced its decision to shut down the business in South Korea in February 2024. “Twitch has been operating in Korea at a significant loss, and unfortunately there is no pathway forward for our business to run more sustainably in that country,” Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in a blog post. Ultimately, Clancy blamed Korea’s network usage fees that are 10 times more expensive compared in most other countries.
