Following the release of 300 Steam Machine prototypes to select beta testers, Valve has also released the Beta version of their free, Linux-based operating system called SteamOS. Moreover, they’ve also provided a detailed instruction on how to get ball rolling with SteamOS (found on the same link above). That said, if you don’t know your way around the Linux ecosystem, then it’s best to leave SteamOS to the true geeks for now. You can download the SteamOS Beta installer by heading over to this link. Valve is rolling out a new feature in the February 12, 2026 Steam beta client that allows users to optionally attach their PC hardware specifications to game reviews posted on store pages. In parallel, Valve has introduced an opt-in “anonymized framerate data” setting. However, the data remains associated with general hardware configurations, allowing Valve to analyze performance trends across device types. At the moment, the framerate collection effort is focused primarily on systems running SteamOS.
