OneDrive withdraws unlimited storage option

Attention users. Changes are coming to the service from Microsoft. Read on to know what’s new for 2016 and plan ahead of the changes.

As stated in a post over OneDrive’s blog, “a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.”

Because of the reason given by OneDrive, they will no longer offer unlimited storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. Instead, they will have 1TB to fill up. Paid plan for new users is now 50GB for $1.99PHP 117INR 169EUR 2CNY 14/month. No more 100GB and 200GB plans available. For most who enjoys free storage for 15GB, sorry to break it to you, it will be limited to 5GB. Also, the extra 15GB camera roll storage will be discontinued. Expect the changes to be in effect early next year.

Now, what if you have files uploaded to the service that exceed the new allocations? If you are an Office 365 subscriber, OneDrive will notify you for storing excess bytes over 1TB and will be able to continue with the service for at least 12 months. If you are not happy with the changes, a pro-rated refund is available.

Free users, who are using more than 5GB of storage, can still access their files for at least 12 months from the effective date. Those already subscribed to the 100GB or 200GB plan will not be affected of the changes..

  1. This is why i only use cloud storage for sending and sharing large files and NOT for back-ups or storage. When they cease to exist or they start charging for its usage, your files will be gone too.

Remember the files you had on friendster, multiply, rapidshare, megaupload etc?

The emails you had on now defunct email services 10-15 years ago?

    Gone.

For back-ups and storage i still prefer external hard drives and dvds.

  2. Yes. Let us abuse the system then wonder why provider suddenly imposed limits.
