There’s this little known underground economy for domaineers that’s very, very lucrative. In one of our discussions the other night at the SEO Philippines party, there’s this one guy from down south who snatched up the .COM of a tri-media popular .COM.PH website — within months, he was allegedly earning USD$6,000 per month from Adsense for domains. Lucky guy (if my guess was right, he used to link/comment to this blog).
Ok, going back to the topic of porn sites snatching up expired domains. A classic example of which is my friends popular blog awards site — the Philippine Blog Awards. I won’t link to it since you’ll end up to a landing page for a porn site. See, he got tired of running the site and decided to let go of it. I told him he should have passed it on to me because the awards was a good way of promoting Filipino blogs. He just forgot about it and moved on.
Now, since the awards was on for about 3 years and every year around 500 or so blogs enter the contest, you’d expect it to have a lot of linkbacks. There are also linked badges still being posted by previous winners. That’s foot traffic right there and then. And for a nifty $9 a month, the porn site owners got a huge bargain for it.
So, if you still have links back to that website somewhere in your archives, please pull them off. And the next time you want to let go of a domain, try and ask a friend or someone you trust if they want it (you can ask me too!). At least, it won’t go and serve some viagra, poker, texas holdem or porn sites.
Really cool blog you have. Let the Force be with you or like say my friend from Khazahstan “great success”!
I was so frustrated beacuse I couldn`t resolve this issue. Then I found your site in google and problem is solved. Thanks!
Hi, I can’t understand how to add your site in my rss reader. Can you help me, please :)
Very informative post! Normally I don’t comment on blogs but this post deserves it :D

@ selaplana
Op kors! hehehe
@ issai
Ahhh yes, billions of money flowing thru that industry could push technology by leaps and bounds.
@ andrew
yeah, great meeting you as well. I guess the site was banned thereafter. :) Still I thought he got it really good while it lasted.
about the Philippine Blog Awards, why don’t you spearhead one? Esp. since you’re the most successful blogger there is in the Philippines.
Ade has a point, then again it follows that by the time we get tired (for whatever reason) or unable to hold on to our domain (which carries our names specifically), we must be big names in the world wide web, like Abe, JAngelo, Marc, etc.
issai’s comment rings some bells for me, I’m also certain there’s that documentary that postulates that porn has been driving communication and media technologies ever since. It may sound ridiculous at first, then again porn is rooted in human nature, and so is technology.
pede po, paki save ng domain ko if i forgot to renew my account with your ploghost.com?
Hi Abe, nice to finally meet you! Anyway, I checked that site you’re pertaining to … from what I understood he was earning $6k from adsense right? Because now he’s selling stuff and appears to not have any form of advertising. I figured he was banned or something, but his other ‘wonderful’ sites still display adsense ads.
That’s why I will never ever let go of my domain. It’s not popular, but it’s my name, for crying out loud! I don’t want people to google my name and end up on a porn site!
ooops…
but hey, porn drives technology… without porn vcr and other technologies like that should’ve died… now, its no longer vcrs, vcds but cellphone technology which porn drives… i forgot what documentary it was that was explaining how porn drove technology… including the INTERNET
