Wikipedia Zero: cost-free access to Wikipedia

As part of their credo to provide “access to free knowledge for every single person on the planet”, WikiMedia Foundation, in partnership with service providers, is planning to give free access to Wikipedia, particularly in areas where internet access is limited.

We assume that will work similarly to the free Facebook access being offered Globe. However, since some of the pages require an ample amount of data, the team is planning to limit the Wikipedia Zero to a lightweight, text-only version; thus cutting load time and making it less cumbersome for the partner telco.

There are already a number of service providers all over the world that signed up for this noble cause. Unfortunately, neither of the top local telcos were on the list, but we’re hoping that they too will join this online initiative.

  1. Should be easier and lighter, especially when optimized to be media-free. If you look at the edit histories of most pages, you’ll notice that most of the real bandwidth bulks are the links to images/videos/music. With these cut from the text, the language simplified as close to plain text as possible, and reference/bibliography sections cut off, you can reduce most pages to be less than a few kb.

  2. I hope I’m wrong.

With this, I see something like a Wiki 0, the free one, and Wiki 1, the paid one.
