On June 20, Huawei officially introduced the beta version of HarmonyOS 6 at its annual developer conference. The second major version of its in-house OS marks a significant advancement by eliminating support for Android apps and concentrating on deep AI integration.

The new Harmony Agent Framework (HMAF) is at the heart of HarmonyOS 6, enabling native AI agents to perform system-level tasks. With training on 20 trillion tokens, HMAF allows external developers to build agents that carry out tasks without the need for app navigation. During a demonstration, Huawei’s Xiaoya voice agent assembled podcasts about Western art history from natural prompts.
The HarmonyOS ecosystem continues to grow, with over 30,000 apps and 1,200 OpenHarmony-based products. However, Huawei is still far from its 2025 goal of 100,000 apps, facing tough competition from global giants like Apple, whose App Store supported $1.3 trillion in sales in 2024.
