GE X5 Digital Camera

Listen to article

I didn’t knew GE (General Electric) had a camera line until I got this GE X5 digital camera in the package. Surprisingly, the GE X5 is not only a capable point-and-shoot camera with manual controls but very affordable too.

GE X5 specs:
14.1MP sensor
5.7x optical zoom
15x digital zoom
2.7-inch display screen
ISO 80 – 3200
27-405mm
f/3.0 – f/5.2
18MB internal memory
SD Card slot (16GB max)
Auto/Manual settings
Multi-AF (TTL 9-point)
High Dynamic Range
Pan-Capture Panorama

And it’s not just your typical rangefinder camera too. Encased in hard plastic body, the GE X5 looks like a mini-dSLR with its large extending lens (also has the same form factor as the Panasonic GF1 or the Canon Powershot G11).

It comes with a built-in flash that flips from the top section though there’s no hotshoe available for external flash.

The focal length of the lens is from 27mm to 405mm (35mm equivalent) which is why the lens extends more than twice the width of the camera.

The controls at the back are laid out in a familiar way that it was easy to figure it out without referring to the manual. And while you need an SD card to store images and videos, the camera has a small 18MB internal storage just in case you need it.

There’s also manual controls to set the camera but you can always revert to the presets when shooting photos.

The GE X5 doesn’t use any proprietary battery but instead relies on 4 x AA batteries for power. The GE X5 retails for Php10,995 in stores.

But wait, there’s more!

Our friends from i-DigiWorld wants us to give this digital camera away. Check them out at GirlTeki.com (follow them of Twitter and Facebook). Will announce the mechanics of how you can win this camera tomorrow (or you can suggest ideas what kind of contest we’ll do).

its a nice camera I purchased 1 yesterday after weeks of reading reviews about it. I got it for 9445 with free rechargeable batteries with charger, 4 gig memory card and pouch. so far so good naman sya. maliban sa memory card, nag eerror sya kung minsan but powercyling the device fix it. over all, maganda sya, matipid sa battery and good picture quality.

maganda din ung manual mode nya, responsive lahat including aperture, shutter speed and ISO etc

strongly recomended

freebies include 4GB sd card, 4 rechargeable batteries and charger. now, the free motorola is being offered i think in all dealers. :)

As for battery concerns, you can save battery life if you use the electonic viewfinder, and not much on the LCD. Also, the battery life depends on the capacity of your battery, and if you have fully charged them before using.

Hi guys,

I bought this cam last Sept. 3 at Camerahaus SM for P11,995. Was one of the firsts who bought this, there was no free phone yet that time. :(
SO far, I’m loving it. It’s a powerful cam for a beginner like me. What I like most is the 15x optical zoom. It’s a bridge camera, so you can choose between auto and full manual mode, where you can play with the settings for more creativity.

You can check our group at facebook, it’s called “GE X5 Users and Enthusiasts.” You can find loads of info and hundreds of sample shots from there. What’s good about it,the info you will get is from acutal X5 users themselves.

Hope this helps. =)

Sir Abe,

any information about the battery life?

Reply

Abe Olandres Editor-in-chief · 16 years ago

@tristan – depends on the battery rating of the AA you used with it (I used 2700mAh with this one but there are 900mAh batteries out there).

@manong – thanks for the correction. glad to know you’re still a fan of this blog even if I don’t take good photos. hehehe

@yuga

“I just re-arranged them and made the 3 ugly aperture shots smaller so others won’t notice”

fixed that for you.

@manong – didn’t change them. they are the same 6 photos I used before. I just re-arranged them. Just an experiment to make sure if you are really looking at them before making a comment.

Over-all, the GE X5 was great!

But, I’m having a small doubts about the battery usage.

Sir Abe, can you make a more extensive review on this item? Check the quality of the photos and videos, as well as the battery life.

A 27-405mm? Wow!

And… I agree, it doesn’t look point and shoot, more like a dslr to me..

Its really nice and decent. Just remember that some sells it for 11,945 with a FREE Motorola phone DAW!!!

Actually you can buy it for 10,495 in some stores (picture city) with free 2GB SD card and rechargeable AA batteries.

I was suppose to buy this but my friend has one and he experiences the occasional seizes of Guards in Malls because the camera looks like a DSLR. So I don’t wan’t those things to happen to me, so I stick to a regular point and shoot.

But why not if I’m given a chance to win one :))

Hope that the contest will be more clear in its point, no offense but the WD contest made me confused of what to do.

Just google GE X5 review. you’ll find many reviews. most are a bit negative

i would be wary about buying this over a higher quality canon in the same price range

really cute camera. peeve ko lang yung weird placement ng GE near the pop-up flash. di nalang nilagyan ng logo nila sa may side nung lens barrel. nagparang cdr-king tuloy.

di kaya mabilis yan magdrain ng AAs?
