We’re starting a new series called #LazadaFinds (and #ShopeeFinds when the opportunity arises) where we purchase items or gadgets that have incredible deals or just utterly unbelievable and useless. We buy them and figure out if they’re worth it so you don’t have to.
Our first #budolfinds is this alleged 10TB Samsung T5 portable SSD that sells for only Php965. We bought it last week and it arrived yesterday.
So, is it a legit #LazadFinds?
Nope. Having owned a Samsung T5 for years, this newly purchased one doesn’t look like the real deal right out of the box.
The SSD came with a clear plastic box as a storage case and a couple of adaptors for USB-A to USB-C and USB-A to microUSB. The design of the SSD is similar but what gave it away were the markings and printing of the label (I think they merely looked for a similar font type).
Lastly, when you plug the SSD into your computer, it will show a 10TB capacity. So we tried filling it up will lot and lots of huge files to see if it can accommodate it.
Actual transfer rate maxes out at around 42.2MB/s which is quite slow for an SSD. We did a benchmark using CrystalDiskMark and got these results.
Not really impressive and it looks like this is just a regular flash drive inside. We’re also a bit doubtful about the claimed 10TB capacity so we tried copying large files into the drive to really see how much data it can hold.
Our guess is that the manufacturer hacked into the board and changed the capacity. The actual capacity, we’re still figuring out by filling the drive with tons of files and it’s going to take us days).
Is it worth it?
We’re on the fence. For one, this is just a fake Samsung T5 drive. It’s also slow at 42MB/s. From that perspective, this is a disappointment.
On the other hand, the storage capacity is still large. Perhaps you can look at this as one of your regular USB Flash drive wrapped in an SSD casing. From that end, this isn’t really a worthless buy.
Ultimately, the lesson here, and it bears repeating again — if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. In short, this is a scam.
