4G iPod Touch: Retina Display & HD Camera

Listen to article

Just moments ago, Apple unveiled the 4th generation iPod Touch which features a retina display and 2 cameras (one for FaceTime and one for HD video recording).

iPod Touch 4th Generation
3.5-inch multi-touch display @ 960×640 pixel resolution
1GHz A4 chip w/ 512 MB RAM
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n (802.11n is 2.4GHz only)
Bluetooth 2.1 w/ EDR
Three-axis Gyro
Accelerometer
Ambient light sensor
HD 720p camera @ 30fps w/ audio
VGA front-facing camera for Face Time

Apple claims the new iPod Touch can do 7 hours of video playback and 40 hours of audio. With the CPU and RAM upgrade, it looks like Apple is dead serious in making the iPod Touch a portable gaming device (Apple even claims it’s bigger than the PSP and Nintendo DS combined).

Apple iPod Touch 4G official price list:

iPod Touch 8GB – Php12,490
iPod Touch 32GB – Php15,990
iPod Touch 64GB – Php21,990

Prices are inclusive of VAT, duty and levies. Items ship in about 4 to 5 weeks (according to Philippine Apple Online Store).

@Rem – Iba kasi experience ng the way gaming flows on iOS devices, anybody can create a game and gain profit so pagandahan ng games at believe me papagandahin talga nila e sa consoles ngaun ang mga sikat may history e square enix, konami, EA, etc so sila lang ang mgaganda e matagal bago mag release so mabagal marketing. and limited lang sa button ang consoles. Apple counters with gyro, accelerometer, game center for competition, touch and developers. and yup sulit na ung price, isipin nyo nalang magkano ang 720p camera ngayon

@manong not the best quality pag ordianry 5mp cam because of the low quality image sensor
“sabi nga sa GSMARENA, ung pictures ng iphone 4 pag na-view mo sa 24″ monitor.. PANGET!” – dipende po yan sa pag kuha mo at how clean your lens is

@Mac Carlos – $229 on 8Gb not $299

Bakit parang ang taas naman ng expectations ng iba sa iPod Touch? Diba it’s a portable music player/game console just like Samsung’s Yepp. For that price palagay ko sulit na eh. May Camera na, iPhone 4 pa yung features except for Voice Calls and SMS. Pero parang masyadong agressive yung Apple ngayon pati Game Console sector plano nilang ma dominate? Para sakin mas maganda siguro kapag touch screen plus hardware keys like the DSi. Hintayin ko na lang siguro yung 3DS. :)

i must say yung game quality ang pag-uusapan pwedeng pareho lang or mas higit pa compared sa psp or dsi, nagkakaiba lang yan sa game experience and playability

gaming advantages:
iPod Touch 4g = may accelerometer / gyroscope / buttonless
PSP & DSi = walang accelerometer /gyrospoce / may buttones

internet browsing:
iPod Touch 4g = madali yang (touch touch touch)
PSP & DSi = pahirapan (press press press) left down right up

at madami pang iba…

i heart ipod touch! same features lang w/ iphone 4.. both can’t make calls! pero 1/4 lng ng price…

THIS will cannibalize iphone4 sales… combine this w/ a cheap celfone ala nokia 1208 and u r good!

imo, the camera is sufficient if u r only viewing it on its 3.5″ screen. sabi nga sa GSMARENA, ung pictures ng iphone 4 pag na-view mo sa 24″ monitor.. PANGET!

the rear camera sucks kapag magpipicture ka lang. 0.7mp lang. tss. magaandroid phone nalang ako sa price na yan. :)tanong po. nakita ko sa site ng apple. $299 ang 8gb at 32gb model? bakit pareho price?

Magpapabili nalang ako sa US, because the 32GB would costs only $299, so that around Php13,500 as compared to Php15,990 sa resellers dito sa Pinas.

@badnobe If you know how good the image sensor of its camera then the size of pixels is not a bother. shooting a video of 720p is no joke!

The previous generation iPod Touch’s are prototypes. After a few years of closed beta testing (many thanks to the *early* adopters), this should be version 1. They are right, this is the iPod Touch we are looking for.

Version 2 will come after 3 more iterations.

Facetime = Video Call over Wi-Fi, kung may wireless router ka at home you can “Facetime” your friends who also have a new generation of ipod touch and/or an iphone 4.

@Alvin
Well that’s how Apple harvest their $$$ from the money tree. Sometimes you don’t need the “wow” factor to sell products, instead an intuitive product that’s easy to use (UI).

I don’t think it’s the end of Apple’s dominance, since pa mura ng pa mura ang price nila compared to last year’s and madami pa din naman na “clones”. When people grew tired of clones they will buy the original one, with or without cash on hand. Uutang pa para makabili.

Anyway what do you not expect the ipod touch would do?
It is still a great touch music player which enthralls the youth.

You cannot efficiently sell a product with powerpacked with features.
Look what happened to Nokia N-Series.

This is a sure candidate of my Christmas gadget wishlist.Big upgrade ala Iphone 4, you can get a gadget with A4 processor, retina display, HD video, near console type of games and face time with a price of Php 12.5k.I am still waiting for Sony to counterpunch with their PSP2 ( if the rumors are true and if will release before the yearend). I love my Ipod Touch 2g but will see in Christmas if I upgrade this or not.

Again. Apple has made history by creating another failure after the iPhone 4G. This time, Apple doesn’t have the WOW surprise factor…i just said “okay, same old product strategy” “same features, they just used the A4 chips and additional ram” to boost performance but there’s nothing really new. Is this the end of Apple’s dominance in the music hardware business? I certainly hope so if this trend is what i’ll be seeing in the next few years…really sad.

@nitecrawler yeah its kinda disappointing with 960×720 and no flash. but still it’s image sensor is great quality with HDR and stuff the image size is just not as big but who cares? people will just use it for FB pics which also size down photos so its just right IMO.

Surprisingly cheap. I thought it would be costing an arm, leg, and maybe your soul. LOL. Good thing this ain’t anywhere close to the price of the iPhone 4G. I’m still content with my 2nd Gen iPod too, so no upgrade anytime soon.

Very nice update, but as expected, they gimped it a little so as not to fully compete with the iPhone.

No GPS
No compass
No camera flash
Rear camera still image resolution is just 960×720, not like the 5MP one in the iPhone 4

But still, I think many potential iPhone 4 buyers will be settling for an iPod Touch instead.

Once again, Steve Jobs proves that he is the thinnest liar alive. Why must he insert BS like owning 50% of the portable gaming market, even more than Sony and Nintendo combined? If your basis is the number of units sold, then probably yes, the iPod touch sold more units than the PSP and the DS. But you really don’t have to use your brain that much (unless you’re a fanboy) to figure out that the games on the iPod Touch/iPhone platform are no way near the quality of games for the PSP and the DS.

It will be available 2 to 3 weeks from now just like before. It has retina display which means it’s almost like your “eyesight” and it will be hard for you to see the pixels. Yeah, it’s like iPhone that has’nt got Phone Features such as SMS, voice call etc. The Facetime is for you to be able to chat or make a video call, picture yourself for a better view,(i believe you can use Skype with this). It is better to wait ’till December for you to have it on a less price. It will be a Merry Merry Christmas for someone who will have this one!
(Specially iPhone 4)
