Sony Blu-ray media shuts down production effective next month

Listen to article

Sony said it’s stoping production of the BD-R, not movies or tv Blu Ray releases.

Good, physical media is holding back cheaper prices for entertainment. In nearly every circumstance you can always find a digital product cheaper than a physical product. As for your opening statement about Blu-ray slated to replace DVD…. Well, it did. Even by your own article ‘nearly two decades’ confirms that, yet you wrote it as if it was a flop like HD-DVD.

I agree. Just like Netflix shut down DVD rentals. Yet it was still profitable by 100 million per year. I mean, how much money do these greedy pigs need.

This is for blank recordable Blu-ray 📀. in other countries they record a lot of content on these disc.this really doesn’t effect America.

This doesn’t mean that they will stop making Blu-ray 📀 Movies 🍿🎥

I can understand the focus on streaming instead of physical discs. Except for one issue. Access to streaming content is revocable by the distributor and/or the publisher. When you have a physical disc you have a copy of the content which cannot be taken away from you (irrevocable).

Listen to the Netflix and Disney comments about watching specific titles before they leave the streaming service.

In my book possession is value.

I wish people would actually report on this correctly. They’re shutting down manufacture of recordable Blu Ray discs specific to the Japanese market. This nuance is repeatedly lost in reporting, which makes it sound like ALL Blu Ray production is being halted. It’s not true.

Sony is the founder of the physical format since CD. Not quite sure why they shutting down this division for Blu-ray, to think that they are also initiate Blu-ray disc . Much better they just down sized that division since there are still market for physical media collectors and not have an access to the net. Physical media and streaming can coexist in one universe for both benefits for collection and convenience.
