Sony, Logitech joins Google TV Project

Listen to article

Google today also announced their new project, aptly called Google TV. The service basically connects your HDTV to the web and organizes the content you like.

Not really a totally new idea since a lot of TV manufacturers already have some sort of web connectivity built-in into their sets but Google wants to be in the center of it all.

Here is Google’s explanation on how Google TV will work:

Logitech comes in as a hardware partner for the Google TV project and is on the finishing stages of the “companion box” that hooks up to your TV via HDMI. Logitech will also create a remote control to pair with it, probably some sort of a keyboard and pointing device in one.

On the other hand, Sony is also introducing their own HDTV models which has the Google TV platform built into the set (so you won’t need the Logitech box anymore).

Google TV with have the Chrome browser into the system and of course allow users to download/install web apps. Google TV will initially be only available in the US around 3rd quarter of this year.

Can’t wait. Question is, can our local ISPs handle the bandwidth?

Anyone remembers the Ilumina iTV – the Pinoy-made TV concept Yuga reported last year? I wonder what happened to that project.

It will be nice for use to experience something similar to Google TV with the Ilumina here.

@raffy – bumped into them a couple of weeks ago. They already got an investor and into silent mode while doing the final stages.

Smart TV was dead on the water the day it launched. Hope Google would start broadcasting shows ala DVB or using the new Webm with the ability to perform DVR functions.
