La más nueva iteración de iPhone por parte de Apple fue recibida con reacciones mixtas del mercado. Se ha dicho mucho, tanto elogios como decepciones, sobre lo que debería haber sido desde el principio. Dado que el lanzamiento local del iPhone 4S con Globe y Smart está a solo unos días de distancia, permítanme compartirles mi opinión sobre este teléfono. Antes de esto, estaba usando un iPhone 4 y he decidido no adquirir el iPhone 4S (logré obtener el iPhone 4 gratis el año pasado con Globe a cambio de un contrato de tres años). Le recomendamos leer nuestra reseña del iPhone 4 del año pasado para tener una mejor perspectiva antes de continuar.
Sinceramente, no vi ninguna razón convincente significativa para actualizar. Comparto este mismo consejo con quienes me lo preguntaron e incluso en apariciones como invitado y entrevistas en televisión. La oportunidad de actualizar llegó por accidente, así que la acepté pensando que también necesitaba usar y revisar el teléfono para ser más razonable con mi conclusión anterior.
Pero antes de ir a eso, permítanme explicarles qué ofrece el iPhone 4S y en qué se diferencia del iPhone 4.
Mejor configuración de hardware.
Doble procesador, más almacenamiento, mejor cámara y conectividad más rápida: eso es lo que el iPhone 4S agregó a la mesa. Ahora cuenta con procesadores de doble núcleo que también se usaron en el iPad 2, así como opciones de almacenamiento 64GB (con 16 Gb y 32GB aún disponibles) y conectividad HSDPA que puede alcanzar hasta 14.4 Mbps.
No hay LTE ni siquiera HSPA+ aquí, por lo que el iPhone 4S no maximizará realmente las velocidades de la red HSPA+ de Smart y Globe.
Apple también mejoró la cámara del teléfono a 8MP con opción para grabar video hasta 1080p Full HD. Más sobre la calidad de la cámara y las funciones HD más adelante.
Como medida adicional, también añadieron Bluetooth 4.0. Aquí no hay soporte para NFC, una tecnología que parece ser la tendencia actual.
Mismo diseño de siempre.
El iPhone 4S luce el mismo diseño antiguo que su predecesor, por lo que no hay nada realmente digno de mención en cuanto al departamento de diseño.
Sí, el diseño y la sólida construcción del iPhone 4 y del iPhone 4S ya son impresionantes, pero personas como yo aún queremos una pantalla más grande. Una pantalla de 4.3 pulgadas parece ser el tamaño mínimo cuando se trata de teléfonos insignia, por lo que la de 3.5" en el iPhone 4S ya se siente dentro de la categoría de gama media.
Aunque el diseño del iPhone 4S ya grita artesanía premium, un poco más de espacio en pantalla habría sido ideal (poniéndose al día con los tiempos, ¿verdad?). Sin embargo, la resolución de pantalla de 960x640 es una de las mejores que hemos visto en la mayoría de los teléfonos de este tamaño (que normalmente rondan los 480x800).
¡Hola, Siri!
Una de las supuestas mejores características del iPhone 4S es la función de asistente personal integrada en el sistema operativo, llamada Siri.
Lo que la diferencia de cualquier otro software de dictado, control por voz o reconocimiento de voz es la capacidad de Siri para comprender mejor la semántica en comparación con el resto. Esto significa que no tienes que dar comandos en una estructura específica para que te entienda. Lo mejor de todo es que Siri realmente tiene un sentido del humor y personalidad.
Siri tampoco es nueva. Ha sido una aplicación independiente durante aproximadamente un año en la iTunes App Store (donde pocas personas la notaron o la usaron). Apple compró la empresa y retiró Siri de la Tienda para integrarla en iOS5. Sin embargo, es curioso que Apple no haya puesto Siri a disposición del iPhone 4.
También hay un truco aquí: necesitarás estar conectado a internet para poder usar Siri. Esto se debe a que los comandos se procesan en la nube (servidores Apple) y otros servicios relacionados como Wolfram Alpha. Eso significa que activar y usar Siri implica cargos de datos y también contribuye a un mayor consumo de batería.
Mi otra queja es que tendrás que hablar con claridad y con un ligero acento estadounidense al hablarle a Siri. De lo contrario, terminarás repitiéndote y frustrándote en el proceso.
Llevo usando el iPhone 4S durante un par de semanas y aún no me he acostumbrado a pedirle a Siri que ejecute comandos. La única vez que lo saco es para demostrarle a la gente cómo funciona o qué graciosas son algunas de sus respuestas.
En su mayor parte, no considero que Siri sea una función esencial para mi uso diario.
Aún la Mejor Cámara.
Cuando iPhone 4 llegó por primera vez, tenía la mejor cámara en cualquier teléfono que haya utilizado. Era tan buena que me siento cómodo sin llevar mi Canon S95 conmigo y usarlo para tomar fotos en su lugar. Lo mismo aplica con el video HD.
El iPhone 4S lleva las cosas un paso más allá y le incorpora una cámara 8MP con capacidades de grabación de video en Full HD 1080p. Aunque la cámara frontal sigue siendo 2MP, te brindará una excelente sensación para videollamadas, pero aún está lejos de igualar la experiencia virtual que ofrecen las soluciones de telepresencia y las videoconferencias estándar sobre una conexión sólida o cableada.
La cámara es una de las más rápidas que he usado en un teléfono. Por experiencia, creo que puede hacer algo como 2fps al tomar fotos fijas.
Images are a bit saturated so colors look deeper and more prominent. Over-all sharp and clean images even at low-light conditions.
Video recording at 1080p is fast and focused with very minimal dropped frames. The microphone picks up a lot of unwanted noise though.
The Network: #globeiphone4s or #smartiphone4s
This is the first time that the iPhone 4S will be offered on more than one network in the country. After being exclusive to Globe Telecom for the past 3 years, Smart Communication will also offer the iPhone 4S both on prepaid and postpaid plans this coming December 16, 2011 (both networks have invited us to attend their launch party).
This offers more option for subscribers to choose the network that works best in their location. I believe it's the type of postpaid package that will play a huge factor when people pick the network.
We still don't have the details of the postpaid plans form Globe and Smart so we can't say much in that aspect (will update come December 16).
As mentioned earlier, the iPhone 4S only comes with an updated HSDPA chip that has a theoretical speed of up to 14.4Mbps. Unfortunately, the HSDPA and HSPA network of both telcos are somewhat congested compared to their newer and faster HSPA+ network so don't expect really great mobile internet connections compared to the ones that use the Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Note.
It's in the OS.
Apple has also rolled out the latest version of their mobile OS. While iOS5 is also available on earlier models of the iPhone (3GS and iP4) and other iDevices, Siri only natively works on the iPhone 4S. You can read more about iOS5 in our earlier post here.,
The dual-core processor helps improve performance of multi-tasking and 1080p video encoding. Twitter is heavily integrated into the OS and Notification looks Android-ish.
iCloud is best used to synchronized all your iDevices and back them all up in the cloud (does not sync and backup SMS messages though). It's not perfect but it works. iMessage is great as a compliment to regular SMS especially when your contacts are using an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad on iOS5.
Battery life is something that's always an issue with the iPhone 4 since it was first introduced. The iPhone 4S had some problems with iOS5 with batteries draining really fast but a fix was rolled out to address this. Expect a good whole day of normal use, a day and a half if you're lucky and around 12 to 18 hours if you're a heavy user.
What's the Bottomline?
The iPhone 4S is a great phone over-all. If you haven't switched to an iPhone, this is the best time to convince you to get one. It's not a big deal if you're coming from the iPhone 4 but will surely get the benefits if you're using the older 3G or 3GS.
Siri doesn't contribute much to the over-all user experience. You won't miss it even if you turn the feature off.

Apple did a bit of re-engineering with the internal circuit to provide better antenna reception for better call quality and 3G signal. So, if you're thinking about that "grip-of-death" issue that plagued the old iPhone 4, it's no longer an issue here.
The iPhone 4S may not be the top choice for a lot of people this year because of the large number of competing handsets that is at par in terms of performance and hardware configuration.
Where the iPhone 4S excels is the smooth integration of the OS and the complementing hardware. It may not have the fastest processor, the biggest screen, or the fastest 4G chip but that's not the game that Apple plays. The iPhone 4 is already a great smartphone. Apple just made it a little better with the 4S.
