Vivo continues to be one of the strongest and fastest growing smartphone brands in the country, capturing the third spot in the Philippine Smartphone market share in Q2 2018. It claims to be a reliable innovator and has committed itself to meet the demands of its consumers.
This year also saw the introduction of various smartphones that brought innovations to the market, as well as partnerships to further improve the brand’s image and technology.
Let’s take a look at some of the company’s milestones for 2018.
Table of Contents
Vivo opened the year by showcasing the world’s first In-Display fingerprint scanning technology at the Consumer Electronics Show or CES 2018. It was able to achieve this feat by putting the fingerprint sensor between the circuit board and display panel. Vivo X21 UD was the first phone released in the Philippines featuring this technology.
The V-series remains as Vivo’s strongest offerings in the Philippines and has released a few of them just this year alone. The Vivo V9 was announced in March with AI-equipped cameras, a screen-to-body ratio of 90%, and Game Mode to enhance gaming performance. This was followed up with Vivo V11 and V11i in September, bringing the In Display Fingerprint scanner technology to the V-series, as well as a teardrop-shaped notch, allowing for more screen real estate, a solid selfie camera, and Jovi AI technology.
Vivo demonstrated a near bezel-less concept phone back in the Mobile World Congress 2018. In June, they announced Vivo NEX, featuring a 6.59-inch display with 91.24% screen-to-body ratio.
This is made possible by putting the necessary sensors underneath the display, and modifying the front camera placement in such a way that it only elevates from the phone’s body once it’s needed. This was followed up by Vivo NEX Dual Screen Edition, which achieved the same goal by adding a second display to allow the rear-facing cameras to serve as selfie cameras.
Vivo has also made its presence known in the lower tier markets by providing solid offerings with the help of their Y-series. Some of their notable offerings are the Y71, Y85, Y81, Y81i, Y91, Y91i, and the leader of the pack, the Y95. The wide-range of offerings allows Vivo to satisfy customers with different budgets.
Vivo continues to partner with other big brands like the NBA, and recently announced its multiyear partnership with NBA Philippines, which will allow Vivo to become the Presenting Partner for the NBA Playoffs Bracket Challenge. This will benefit both companies as Vivo will serve as the tech platform to promote the NBA and basketball in general.
5G is the future and is slowly becoming a reality, promising speeds 10-20 times higher than that of existing 4G technology. Vivo isn’t going to be left behind and announced their partnership with Qualcomm last June, aiming to integrate 5G capable antennas into future products. 5G is expected to be deployed in major markets starting 2019 and 2020.
Vivo has definitely achieved and offered a lot this year, and we can definitely expect more from the company in 2019.
