Pasig Mega Market gets Starlink internet for cashless payments

Listen to article

Pasig Mega Market now has satellite-powered internet to support cashless payments under the Paleng-QR Ph Plus program of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the Department of Information and Communications Technology. The new service aims to improve digital transactions for vendors, customers, and nearby businesses in the market.

The internet service is powered by Starlink and provides public WiFi access inside Pasig Mega Market. It is designed to make QR-based payments more stable and easier to use, especially in busy market areas where connection issues often happen.

The rollout is part of the Paleng-QR Ph Plus program, a joint effort of BSP and DICT to promote the use of QR Ph, the country’s standard system for cashless payments. The program encourages safer and faster transactions without the need for cash.

During the launch event, BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and DICT Undersecretary Sarah Maria Q. Sison demonstrated an online payment using the new system. Other officials and local representatives also attended, including DICT Assistant Secretary Christian Mark G. Guingcangco, vendor Cecilia Valencia, and Pasig City Councilor Simon Gerard R. Tantoco.

The initiative supports the government’s goal of expanding digital financial services and building a more cash-lite economy in public markets and small businesses.
