All Intel-powered Macs dropped from macOS 27 Golden Gate

Listen to article

With Apple releasing its latest desktop operating system macOS 27 Golden Gate, there is much buzz over the latest features coming with this update. However, there is also news that a significant portion of the current user base may be excluded. Here’s the scoop.

Before we get into the latest developments, Golden Gate is the most recent iteration of macOS. Like previous versions, it’s also named after a landmark in California.

The most notable features include the adoption of the Liquid Glass design from iOS, an all-new Siri AI with Spotlight integration,  Visual Intelligence, faster UI performance, and the full Apple Intelligence suite; among others.

Unfortunately, a quick look through the update page lists down which devices will be supported by Golden Gate:

Looking at this list, the most obvious omissions will be certain devices that received macOS 26 Tahoe but aren’t here. These are either MacBook Pro or iMac models from 2019/2020 with Intel processors.

In short, only Macs running Apple silicon will be moving on with macOS 27 Golden Gate.

At the same time, it is said that not all devices will have the same level of access to Golden Gate’s features. Full Siri AI support will require at least an M3 processor and 16GB of RAM. You’ll also need 35GB of storage to install it.

What are your thoughts? Should Intel users try to upgrade?
