ABS-CBN TVplus Go Hands-on

ABS-CBN launched last month the TVplus Go. It’s the mobile version of its TVplus for the home that connects to your smartphone which turns it into a DTV. We finally got our hands on a unit, so check out our hands-on review below.

The ABS-CBN TVplus Go comes in a small package that includes the dongle and antenna. They’re separate, so you’ll need to attach the telescopic antenna first before using. I like that it’s detachable so you can safely store it in your bag or your pocket.

The dongle looks like your typical thumb drive with a micro USB interface. If you have USB Type-C port, you’ll need to use a micro USB to USB-C adapter. The antenna, on the other hand, has a hinge, allowing you to adjust the angle.

Before you use the TVplus Go, you’ll need to download the TVplus Go Android app. After that, connect the TVplus Go to your smartphone and follow the setup process. Make sure to allow permissions for it to work correctly.

Once the phone detects the TVplus Go, the app will start searching for channels. The number of channels identified would depend on your location. It’s better if you’re near the window if you’re at home.

The TVplus Go supports available free DTV channels, including the exclusive TVplus channels such as DZMM TeleRadyo, CineMo, YeY, Knowledge Channel, MYX, Asianovela Channel, Movie Central, Jeepney TV, and O Shopping. However, registration is required to access those exclusive channels, but it is free for the first Android device you use it on. It asked me for a PHP 40 fee when I used it on a second Android device, then PHP 20 on the third. I find it weird and a bit inconvenient. Other than that, it works as advertised.

I installed the TVplus Go on the Huawei Y Max to see how it looks on a smartphone with a big screen. It’s not 1080p quality, but it looks great. The interface is easy to understand, and you can adjust the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 to full screen. You can also manually scan and check on signal information inside settings.

Switching between channels is also relatively quick, and we didn’t experience any lag or stuttering. No problem with audio as well, but output quality will depend on your phone’s loudspeaker or headphones. We’ve been watching shows for hours and didn’t feel any significant warming. So far, my experience with it is great and I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to watch their favorite local channels on-the-go.

The ABS-CBN TVplus Go is priced at PHP 799 and is available in Cellboy and Celltime branches in SM Malls.

Bought a TVplus Go, so far so good.

The dongle disconnects sometimes on its own, though I notice it’s due to the case preventing the USB from inserting fully. Also the software crashed once. On the plus side it picks up signal easily even inside a mall.

The antenna is detachable, but I find that it attaches _very_ tightly to the dongle. I had a hard time removing it without exerting too much force on the antenna and accidentally bending it. Might as well keep it on the dongle permanently if you experience the same issue, after all it’s compact.

Ah should clarify: by case I mean my smartphone’s case. If you go caseless or your case doesn’t block the USB port, the dongle should go in perfectly.
