According to a report from Patently Apple, Apple has just won a patent relating to a camera placed under the display that would seemingly make Face ID invisible to the eye.

The patented apparatus features a camera under the display, a processor, and a light source.

Iphone X Face Id

While there hasn’t been official word on if and when an iPhone will have an under-display Face ID camera, there have been rumors suggesting that such a feature will be included in Apple’s iPhone 16.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an under-display camera used for facial recognition, as both Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Fold4 have made use of an under-screen camera implementation. However, both under-display cameras hamper the quality of selfie-cam images and videos so we’re curious to see how Apple is going to combat the same challenge.

Also, if the under-display camera or Face ID is implemented in a future iPhone, this could very well mean that Apple’s recent Dynamic Island notch design may soon come to an end.
