ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Unboxing, First Impressions, Benchmarks

Dual front cameras are definitely very popular now, and ASUS definitely has a seat on the bandwagon. Here we have one of the smartphones from the freshly launched Zenfone 4 series, the Zenfone 4 Selfie.

It is the successor to the original ZenFone Selfie, which saw its release two years ago. The ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie boasts a 20MP + 8MP front camera tandem, and has about mid-range specs and features. Let’s get it out of the box.

The packaging is all-white, with the text and illustrations having a rainbow shine effect. It’s reminiscent of HTC’s U Series packaging, which we can definitely appreciate. Inside the box, aside from the phone itself, you get a clear silicone case, a pair of earphones, extra earbuds, a micro USB cable, and a wall plug.

Taking a first look at the device, it sports a 5.5-inch IPS display, running at a resolution of 1280 x 720. HD resolution is definitely somewhat dated, but consider that it will save you a lot of battery life. Above the screen sits the dual 20MP+8MP front cameras, their dedicated LED flash, and the call speaker. Down below, navigation is handled by non-LED lit capacitive touch buttons. The home button also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Overall, the front face of the Zenfone 4 Selfie looks very plain and there is nothing strikingly interesting about it. It’s a case of function over form for that side of the device.

Moving to the rear, we see the 16MP rear camera, its LED flash, the silver ASUS logo smack in the middle, all of which sit between a couple of antenna bands. For both the front and back sides, we noticed straight away that the phone is very weak against fingerprints and dust.

The right side houses the volume and power buttons, while the left side has the dual nano-SIM tray with a dedicated micro SD card slot.

There’s the headphone jack and call microphone at the top of the device. Down at the bottom, we have two audio grills; one speaker and one microphone. Data and charging are handled by a micro USB port.

In terms of overall aesthetics, the Zenfone 4 Selfie doesn’t have anything new to offer. Its performance in taking selfies is where it does shine, however. Both its standard and wide field of view cameras take good pictures, which puts it comfortably on the map of dual front camera smartphones. We will be exploring the phone’s camera performance more in our full review, but we have some sample shots for you to check out.

The Zenfone 4 Selfie runs on a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 processor with 4GB of RAM. We ran some initial benchmark tests to see how well the phone performs. Check out the scores below:

  • AnTuTu: 43,322
  • PCMark (Work 2.0): 3,689
  • GeekBench: 662 (Single-core), 2,250 (Multi-core)
  • Vellamo: 2,402 (Chrome), 1,225 (Metal), 1,522 (Multicore)

That wraps up our unboxing, first impressions, and benchmarks of the ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie. Right off the bat, this smartphone is clearly aimed at the mid-range market both with its specs, and its SRP of Php13,995.

Stay tuned for our full review, and be sure to check out the rest of our coverage on the Zenfone 4 series.
