Nokia might recall 46 million phone batteries

nokia-batteries.jpgAre you a proud and loyal owner of a Nokia mobile phone? Is you Nokia phone using a BL-5C type battery? (You can check by flipping open your battery pack and look for the code printed at the back of the battery.) According to Wired News, several reports mentioned these type of batteries are overheating while charging.

The advisory applies to batteries manufactured by Matsushita from December 2005 to November 2006, the world’s largest mobile phone maker said. Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan is one of several suppliers that have together made some 300 million BL-5C batteries.

The lithium-ion battery is one of 14 different types of battery used in Nokia phones.

Nokia said 100 incidents of overheating of the Matsushita-made BL-5C batteries have been reported worldwide, but added that “no serious injuries or property damage have been reported.”

Nokia phones using the BL5C batteries include the Nokia 3650, Nokia 3100, Nokia 6600, Nokia 1100, Nokia 2300, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6820, Nokia 7600, Nokia 3660.

I thought are supposed to heat up during charging and use? Maybe these ones are really overheating. Besides, there are a lot of knock-off batteries from China selling them at dirt cheap prices.

Well, at least you know you can have them batteries replaced when needed.

  1. My N6600 has a BL-5C dry cell too.

I thought it was normal for the battery to gain heat since my relatives with the same battery type are also complaining the same problem.

I also observe that this battery type is expanding as it ages. Anyway, I might think of buying other battery types since shipping it to Nokia might be more expensive than buying a new one.

Too bad, Nokia will have to shell out a couple hundred million dollars. I take that back. Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan should be the one shelling the green..

  2. oops, wrong entry

  3. yeah my bl5c battery is also expanding

  4. My BL-5C battery expands too, I notice that last year when I try to open the bat compartment since I wonder why my celfon was just too warm to touch.

  5. I got mine replaced and mailed to me from Nokia Hongkong.

  6. I thought that phone batteries are supposed to heat up during charging and again to use this phone?

  7. Yes, but you need to request a new battery either though Nokia website or any nearest Nokia dealer.
