Samsung’s Galaxy S’s big brother, the Galaxy S2 (i9100), has been unveiled with a much better display and hardware specs. Update: see our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S2 here.
Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor
4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus display @ 480×800 pixels
Gorilla Glass display
1GB RAM
16GB/32GB internal storage
HSDPA 21Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps
WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
GPS w/ aGPS support
8MP autofocus camera with LED flash
1080p video recording
2MP front-facing camera for video calls
FM Radio Tuner
Li-Ion 1650mAh battery
Android 2.3 Gingerbread
The Galaxy S2 comes with an optional NFC support (Near-Field Communication) though I don’t see any real-world benefits for it right now. Much like most other big-ass Android smartphones (e.g. HTC Desire HD), the 480×800 pixel resolution on a 4.3″ display could be a bit of a disappointment to some.
Expected release is before end of this quarter though there’s no indicated price yet (my hunch is that it will be within the vicinity of the first Galaxy S which is like 32k to 35k).

Paul says:
Aye, the low resolution is a deal breaker.
That retina display on the iPhone 4 really spoils you, and considering the next version will have upgraded CPU and memory specs it’s better to wait for that if you plan to spend 35k or more on a smartphone.
BRUNO says:
^Fanboi spotted
“Just wait for new iPhone” – typical fanboi lines.
Earl says:
I really look forward to this handset!!!^^
cosmic says:
Ang ayoko ko lang sa Android, yun mga APPS!!
@Paul says:
Low resolution a deal breaker? Haha! Having no SD slot is a deal breaker. Dropping calls because you didn’t hold your phone the way Steve Jobs told you to is a deal breaker. Having your phone coated in a glass that shatters when it falls is a deal breaker. Having to use itunes to transfer files is a deal breaker. Having even one thing common with you, ie, iphone user/apple fanboy, is the biggest deal breaker of them all!
Paul says:
@BRUNO
Yes, I am a fanboy for high quality.
After all when I spend 35k on a smartphone I don’t expect to see pixels, which is what you’ll get if you look hard enough on 800×480 resolution 4.3″ displays. :)
dhan says:
but still, the hardware specs makes one drool XD.
gotta agree with cosmic on the apps for android but I have high hopes that the android market will get more “quality apps”
(currently using galaxy spica)
:)

Fleeb says:
Well before the iP4 (iP3GS), it’s wait for the iP4. Now it’s wait for the iP5. I’ll wait for the iP7, quality and all. But then again, thus the reason why I don’t really like 4.3″ screens with low pixel density. Let’s wait and see where that 4.5″ Hitachi screen with a pixel density of about 360 dpi (?) at 1280×720 will be used.
Paul says:
@Fleeb
Why the double standard? You also have to wait for the next Galaxy S.
If you need a smartphone right now then both the iPhone 4 and the current Galaxy S are fine and timely choices, since if last year’s launches were an indication it’ll take 3-4 months after US launch before they make it here.
Ideally, you’ll likely see them on Globe by 3rd quarter.

And now Samsung has no reason to release Android 2.3 on any of their current phones. Want Gingerbread? Get a new phone.

@lolipown
who needs official samsung updates when devs cook custom ROMS a 100x better than the stock ones..
lolipown says:
@boo
For tech-savvy users I concur that it’s a non-issue but not everyone wants to root/hacktify their device.

agree with lolipown. that’s how they’ve always been. hmpht!!!

yuga please make your blog more up to date, coz galaxy S II has been featured to tons of int’l review sites since yesterday .. i don’t mean anything bad, just constructive criticism :)
anyway, one thing that i don’t like about the phone is it’s over-all plastic body

Back to this phone, plastic is a no no for me.

At least it’s not a shiny plastic this time.
I don’t have any problems with low ppi screens. It’s a thing that users will not notice if not aware. Guys, you’re frustrating yourself over nothing. Not that the screen degrades, it’s still 800×480, the standard for android, c’mon people! You’re being too geeky. Our TVs at home don’t even reach 100 ppi yet no one complains.
Actually, no one complains until apple released iphone 4. I wonder why… XD
anyway, that’s how trends work right? Much as in fashion industry.
Well it’s a thing to be considered, yeah. But certainly not a deal breaker, because you also avoid fragmentation, for non auto-scaling apps that is.
As we’re talking about ppi here, you should know that a high res should compensate with bigger screens to be 100% effective. WVGA on 4.3″ is still on the bracket, it’s usable at its best, DHD owners must agree.
I’m not anti-retina display innovation blah blah. I just think high res screens is way too over rated. Congratulations to apple, you influenced people a lot. And for the record, i don’t believe the resolution is the only thing responsible for iphone 4’s highly praised retina display. I think it’s more on the IPS technology behind it and of course, because of the totality of every technology apple applied in between.
Anyone’s welcome to disagree.
raymond says:
On the contrary, those who actually saw the Samsung Galaxy S II were awed by the Super AMOLED Plus screen! Even brighter than the previous Super AMOLED but consumes significantly less power.
boo says:
@lolipown
there are custom ROMs and with constant updates which i think are superior in terms of features than what samsung has been providing..
@paul
fanboi for high quality???
no expansion memory + itunes dependence + previous signal problems= high quality?
blinded i guess.. i own an ip4 so i experienced it firsthand..aside from the retina display and smoother UI, it has nothing on the current galaxy s model.. i would have opt for an ipod if it wasn’t for the resolution and lcd quality..
boo says:
@lolipown:
i agree.. its not for everyone.. i just hope samsung will continue to support the older model since not everybody replaces their phones annually..
also, it may discourage new users to pick up their products if it has very limited support..

“As at CES, we were blown away by the clarity and brightness of the Super AMOLED Plus display — picture the already-excellent Super AMOLED technology amped up on steroids, and you’ll have a good sense of what we’re talking about here.”
From phonearena:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-hands-on_id16729
“Dubbed Super AMOLED Plus, it remedies the main drawbacks of the first generation, as found in the Galaxy S, namely low actual resolution, due to use of the PenTile matrix, and run-of-the-mill brightness. The 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus display on the Galaxy S II has a 50% higher sub-pixel count, which made text more clearly discernible than on the Galaxy S. The bump in brightness was also very visible, regardless of our indoors setting when we handled the phone. ”
From gsmarena:
http://www.gsmarena.com/mwc_2011_samsung-review-567p2.php
“The new Super AMOLED Plus display is quoted to have an improved response time, reportedly beating LCD IPS technology. The should also reduce power consumption by 18%. ”
“Super AMOLED Plus also comes with a Real Stripe matrix. Theoretically, this means images may be a wee bit sharper looking, though at first glance you won’t see the difference between the regular Super AMOLED and the Plus one. The Pentile matrix of the previous gen SAMOLED screens was the main cause for some overly geeky criticism. “
BRUNO says:
@paul:
Totally bro, coz it’s the only high quality product out there right?
GUMZ says:
bilis mag.change model… sana ganun din ka bilis ang update…

nice catch… mukha pa rin ni yuga ang icon… :-)
Paul says:
@boo
Eh, I happen to like iTunes. No brainer syncing. I also got a case with mine since my hands are sweaty, I didn’t even get to check if there was a signal problem. :)
And why didn’t you get an iPod? iPhone 4 went out locally September last year, there were refreshed 2010 iPods by then and they have retina display too.
raymond says:
The screen technology of the Galaxy S II is not something to be underestimated.

Samsung galaxy S II is the forefront of latest and greatest hardware specs super AMOLED Plus, dual core 1ghz processor, 1gb ram, gorilla glass, hspa+ 21Mbps, 1080p @30fps encoding/decoding, etc. plus ginger bread 2.3
This really pushes competition to next level. Samsung can introduce more new products faster than Apple because they are more advanced than Apple. Korea and Japan are 3-4 years ahead than US in Technology right now.
Abe Olandres says:
@name & @wakocoke — sorry for the delay in the blog post. There was a death in the family and I flew back to the province. Not having enough sleep and time to go online, I think I missed the press release/story by about a day. Will try my best next time.

I give you my condolences Sir. Yuga! I know your doing your best to deliver the latest tech news to us readers and it is much appreciated!
daryl puyales says:
will it run or can be upgraded to android 3.0?
Something. says:
@daryl:
3.0 is exclusively for tablets as of the moment. Google hasn’t announced anything related to honeycomb on a smartphone. So, 2.3 is the latest firmware for an android smartphone in the meantime.

Cesar Noel says:
When I discovered that you can backup you Android data on your Google Account (and with no other softwares) made me wonder why apple cannot do away with the iTunes and go directly to the ‘net. Also not all podcasts can be downloaded on your iPhone/iPod Touch devices because of store restrictions.
kyflo says:
I hope that it has a 1seg TV tuner just like the Brazilian specs of this phones.
Pogz says:
How’s the battery life? Typical less than a day andriod? Multi-Cores consume more power. To be clear, i mean using the same tech i.e. Core 2 duo vs. Core 2 Quad. Given the same clock speed a dual-core consumes less power compared to the quad.
Same story goes with single vs. dual-core. And styling wise, samsung should innovate and not imitate the iphone.
