Activision introduces Call of Duty: Warzone, a free-to-play BR

Activision has introduced Call of Duty: Warzone, a free to play battle royale with up to 150 players, an expansive city map, and the Gulag.

In Warzone, players take on the role of a Tier 1 Operator, squad up to trios, and compete in two game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder. The Battle Royale game mode is a last man standing mode where players fight to the last squad standing while escaping the deadly gas closing the playable area. The Plunder game mode, on the other hand, is a race to collect the most cash by looting the map, stealing cash from other players, and completing contracts.

Both game modes take place in Verdansk, a city with over 300 points of interest, notable landmarks, and different environments that offer unique engagements.

Warzone also has five vehicle types that allow players to traverse the map faster:

  • ATV – a fast two-seater that’s good at offroading and offers minimal protection
  • Tactical Rover – a faster four-seater that’s good at offroading and offers minimal protection
  • SUV – a medium speed four-seater that’s not ideal for offroading and offers good protection
  • Cargo Truck – the slowest vehicle that’s not good at offroading, but provides the best protection
  • Helicopter – can fit four players and provides decent coverage

Warzone also offers new twists in the battle royale genre such as:

  • The Gulag (only in the Battle Royale Mode) – During players’ first elimination, they become a Prisoner of Warzone and are thrown into the Gulag. Here, other players who have become prisoners will fight to the death in a 1v1 combat for a chance to be redeployed into Verdansk.
  • Contracts – Players may find contracts across Verdansk, where they can receive cash and other loot upon completion. There are several types of contracts, such as scavenger contracts and recon contracts.
  • Buy Stations – Players may use their in-match cash to purchase killstreaks, redeployment tokens, self-revive kits, and more at Buy Stations spread across the map.
  • Seamless Play – Call of Duty: Warzone offers crossplay from different platforms. Items from Modern Warfare will carry over to Warzone, and all progression earned in Warzone will carry over to Modern Warfare.

Players who already own Call of Duty Modern Warfare will notice the previously named Classified panel on the main menu replaced by Warzone. They may download the game mode (around 18-22GB), starting at 8 AM PDT on March 10. Players who do not own Modern Warfare may download the game for free (around 83-101GB) in respective first-party stores starting 12 PM PDT.

  1. Being a COD original I have to say this is one of my favorite BR that have come out so far. It’s so easy to get caught slippin in this tho. Total silence and then team of three, or sniped.
