According to an article by the Philippine Star, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will be providing financial aid to workers displaced by COVID-19.
According to the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), 6,000 workers have been displaced as businesses have shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To help workers in need, DOLE has set aside a budget of PHP 2 billion for financial assistance. Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez said that workers may choose not to report to work and use their leave credits during the quarantine period. Moreover, those that have to undergo a mandatory quarantine, but have exhausted their leave credits will be provided financial assistance by DOLE.
The DOLE program is open for all workers, whether they’re no work, no pay workers, contractual, or regularized. While the guidelines have not yet been set, Benavidez said that the DOLE program would provide qualified workers with a monthly subsidy.
TUCP has also asked the government to provide discount caravans that will allow low paid workers access to cheaper food.
