Facebook has announced new ways to inform users about fact-checked content, as well as actions to be taken against people who repeatedly share misinformation, to prevent false or misleading content from spreading on the platform.
According to Facebook, stronger action will be taken against people who repeatedly share misinformation which includes penalties for individual accounts. Facebook will reduce the distribution of all posts in the News Feed from an individual’s Facebook account if they repeatedly share content that has been rated by their fact-checking partners.
A pop-up notification will appear to give users more information before they Like certain Pages that have repeatedly shared content that fact-checkers. Users can also click to learn more which includes statements from fact-checkers on posts shared by the Page that have false information. Additionally, a link to the details of Facebook’s fact-checking program will be given.
Facebook has also redesigned notifications that people get when they share content that a fact-checker later rates so they’re easier to understand. The notification includes the fact-checker’s article debunking the claim as well as a prompt to share the article with their followers. It also includes a notice that people who repeatedly share false information may have their posts moved lower in News Feed so other people are less likely to see them.
