OnePlus on Wednesday announced that they will be offering “four generations of OxygenOS and five years of security updates on selected devices” beginning next year.
The brand confirmed its commitment to longer software support to a media roundtable concerning OxygenOS 13. However, there are no mention yet of the ‘select’ devices that will enjoy the new update policy. Perhaps, it will be the flagships that are most likely to have the extended support.
“As a user-oriented company, we do everything we can to enhance our user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that possibility,” said Gary Chen, OxygenOS Product Lead. “This new update policy will give you access to the latest security and newest features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone.”

Recent OnePlus devices like the OnePlus 8 get up to three major operating system upgrades with four years security updates. While older devices past OnePlus 7 and recent Nord devices only get two OS updates, and the N-series phones only get one OS updates both with three years security updates.
XDA Developers reported that OnePlus will be aiming for a bi-monthly security updates in the duration, but it wasn’t clear whether how fast would the major OS updates would be. The brand is yet to confirm if the extended support will also apply the existing recent OnePlus devices.
Presumably, the upcoming OnePlus 11 will run on the new policy update and will be provided support until Android 17. Prior to the announcement, only Samsung offers four major OS updates for its flagships.
