OpenAI announces rollout of GPT-5.1

Listen to article

OpenAI has announced GPT-5.1, with its rollout starting with paid users. The company says the upgrade comes with the intent of making it easier to customize ChatGPT.

It’s available across the platform’s free and paid tiers. However, enterprise and education customers have an early access period before GPT-5.1 becomes the default model.

The GPT-5 model update promises faster responses, improved reasoning, and flexible controls for conversations. It’s essentially a refined experience to help compete with Claude, Gemini, and other open-source models.

The update brings two variants, which include Instant and Thinking. Both work to offer users adaptive reasoning and more options for personalization.
The model now has conversational presets such as professional, friendly, candid, quirky, efficient, and cynical to name a few. Custom instructions across multi-turn conversations are now set to persist with the update.

OpenAI says that they’ve taken feedback from users who prefer AI to be enjoyable to talk to. The new changes address this, bringing more intuitive responses that not only work to understand users, but their tone as well.
