The Philippine National Police (PNP) has supported calls for stronger action against fake news and online disinformation, saying it will continue monitoring online platforms and support tighter social media rules.

This came after the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) sent a letter to Meta Platforms Inc., which owns Facebook. The agencies asked the company to improve its policies to limit fake news and harmful content online.
The request followed findings by the PCO’s Anti-Fake News Desk, which reported false information targeting Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and other government officials.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said current rules on social media are not enough due to the large amount of false content shared daily. He said stronger monitoring and stricter rules from social media companies can help reduce the spread of misleading information.
Based on past cybercrime cases, the PNP said some content creators spread false information while making it look like real news. These posts have caused confusion and even public disorder.
Nartatez also said freedom of expression has limits and should not harm others. He urged the public to think before sharing content and report fake news when seen.
