Meta removes AI Image Feature for Instagram

Listen to article

Meta has removed a recently announced AI image feature that allowed users to generate images based on content from public Instagram accounts after receiving widespread criticism.

The tool lets users create AI generated images by tagging a public Instagram account, without really asking the account owner’s permission first. If someone didn’t want their public posts used for AI creation, they had to do a sort of manual opt out, through Instagram settings or else make their account private, which they find a hassle.

Meta said it got feedback that the feature “missed the mark” and basically decided to disable it.

This option also sparked concerns from Hollywood agency CAA and the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA. They said a person’s name, image, voice, and creative work should not be used by AI without clear consent.
