Instagram finally lets its users replace the background music for published posts and carousels without losing accumulated engagements. The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that Meta may have violated the Digital Services Act (DSA) over the allegedly addictive design of Facebook and Instagram. Investigators also found that Meta did not sufficiently consider how long minors spend on Facebook and Instagram, especially at night, or how formats such as Reels and Stories may contribute to excessive use. As part of its preliminary findings, the Commission said Meta may need to redesign both Facebook and Instagram by disabling features such as autoplay and infinite scroll by default, introducing more effective screen time breaks, and modifying its recommendation systems to prioritize user well-being over engagement. The Commission is also conducting separate investigations into Meta's age verification measures for minors and the potential "rabbit hole" effects created by Facebook's and Instagram's recommendation systems. Meta has removed a recently announced AI image feature that allowed users to generate images based on content from public Instagram accounts after receiving widespread criticism. The tool lets users create AI generated images by tagging a public Instagram account, without really asking the account owner’s permission first. If someone didn’t want their public posts used for AI creation, they had to do a sort of manual opt out, through Instagram settings or else make their account private, which they find a hassle.
