TikTok to exit Hong Kong market soon

According to a report by Reuters, TikTok will be exiting the Hong Kong market soon.

Following China’s establishment of a new national security law for Hong Kong, TikTok has decided to exit the region, stating, “In light of recent events, we’ve decided to stop operations of the TikTok app in Hong Kong.”

TikTok is designed so it cannot be accessed by mainland China to appeal to a global audience. Because it’s not clear whether Hong Kong will fall under Beijing’s jurisdiction, TikTok has made the pre-emptive move to exit the region.

This is in line with TikTok’s previous statement that they will not accommodate the Chinese Government’s request to censor content or access TikTok’s user data and assured that they have never been asked to do so.

As an alternative ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company may introduce a similar app for the Chinese market, Douyin.
