WhatsApp rolls out feature allowing use of linked devices without smartphone connection

WhatsApp has rolled out a feature that would allow users to link their account to a different device and still receive and send messages without their smartphone being connected.

Previously, the smartphone still had to be connected to the internet in order to receive and give out messages, but with the new update, this feature will not require your smartphone an internet connection. Once enabling this “Beta” feature, it will allow up to 4 devices to receive end-to-end encrypted messages and calls of up to 14 days when the smartphone goes offline.

There is a limitation, however, for iOS users. The limitation is that it won’t allow iOS users to delete messages or conversation threads from a linked device, other limitations include not being able to link a separate tablet or a secondary smartphone.

In order to use the new linked feature, follow the steps below:

1. Open your WhatsApp and tap on the three-dotted icon on the top right corner.
2. Tap “Linked Devices” and then select “Link a Device”. A QR code will then be provided which can be scanned.
3. Head to the Whatsapp Web and scan the QR code.

This feature is now officially rolling out to all WhatsApp users in its most recent update for Android and iOS versions.
