MSI GT80 Titan hands-on, first impressions

Listen to article

MSI Philippines launched yesterday the newest addition to their gaming laptops, the GT80 Titan with built-in Cherry MX mechanical keyboard and a touch pad that acts as a numerical keypad too. We got a chance to test the new laptop for a short time, and here’s what we have to say.

MSI-GT80Titan-Hero

The MSI GT80 Titan is a full-blown gaming laptop that can serve as a desktop replacement and is the world’s first to be equipped with the Cherry MX Brown mechanical keyboard with standard key cap height. It also sports a fourth generation Intel Core i7 processor, and can use up to two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M GPU to take advantage of the machine’s SLI technology.

To top things off, it sports a Super Raid 3 configuration, an advanced Cooler Boost 3 technology, Audio Boost 2 for a better headset sound, and Dynaudio and Sound Blaster Cinema 2 for enhanced audio. It comes with a ton of bundled software as well like Matrix Display for multi-monitor setups and XSplit Gamecaster for online game streaming.

The Titan boasts an 18.1-inch Full HD IPS display with a matted panel, which resonates to 120ppi. Despite the somewhat low ppi count, the viewing angles are good and the images and colors on the screen still appear vivid and crisp.

It is undeniably big, bulky, and heavy, but is considered to be one of the slimmest laptops in its category. It presents red accents with the MSI G series logo at its cover, and is finished with a black metallic brush pattern. Just underneath the display are the main components of the laptop that can be seen by sliding the plate to the side.

Even with our short time with it we can still say that the laptop is very promising. The speaker system with Dynaudio sounds good, and the placement of the keyboard keys and the touch pad-slash-numerical keypad at the bottom of the sliding panel is very intuitive, and offers more options for enhanced gaming. I tend to slam my wrists on the trackpad of a laptop with a normal layout most of the time, so this kind of setup is a huge welcome for me.

The Cherry MX keyboard is a treat for those who are truly into the gaming scene. It will take some getting used to especially if you’re more accustomed to membrane keyboards but you will surely appreciate the mechanical keys installed on the laptop. These keys bounce up at an instant and is definitely made for those times when you need to press certain keys repeatedly at a very fast rate. There’s also a five-piece, gold-plated keycap included (Esc, W, A, S, D) for a smoother and better key feel.
