Blogged about this back in August last year and was already impressed by the specs but the Acer Aspire 8943G needs to get some man-handling to really appreciate this beast of a multi-media laptop.
With a display size of 18.4″, this is the biggest laptop we’ve ever tried and tested here. It’s pretty heavy too at 10.1lbs. No doubt this is already a good desktop replacement at home and just right as an entertainment center in the bedroom or den. That is, if you can afford the hefty price tag of Php120,900USD 2,060INR 174,652EUR 1,962CNY 15,004.
Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G
18.4″ display @ 1080p (1920×1080 pixels)
Intel Core i7-720QM 1.6GHz (4 cores, 8 threads, Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 1GB
8GB DDR3 RAM (2 x 4GB)
1,280GB HDD (2 x 640GD Western Digital HDD)
4x Blu-ray Disc/DVD SuperMulti Double-Layer Drive
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
5-in-1 card reader
5.1 Cinematic Surround by Dolby
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
Gigabit LAN
5 x USB 2.0 ports
1 x eSATA port
1 x IEEE 1394 port
1 x HDMI port with HDCP support
1 x Consumer infrared (CIR) port
Fingerprint Scanner
Digital TV-tuner supporting DVB-T
8-cell Li-Ion battery (4800 mAh)
Windows Home 7 Premium 64-bit
For a 2010 model, the specs is already one of the best you can get around that quarter (came out in 3rd quarter of 2010). Only thing I think is missing is USB 3.0 though it’s not a huge deal unless you have other devices on 3.0. Aside from that, I don’t think you’ll be looking for anything more from this unit.
The laptop comes with this featured remote control (thus the need for the IR port on the notebook) which you can use for Blu-ray playback and the optional digital TV tuner.
It’s really great that Acer manage to bump the display resolution to 1080p (1920×1080 pixels) for full HD movie experience.
Here’s one other nifty surprise I just found out — the trackpad doubles as a playback control. Just press the circular button at the lower end and the lighted controls show up on the surface of the trackpad. At the front, there’s also a dial to control volume of the system. Pretty neat If I might add.
Here’s a screenshot of the Windows Experience Index of the Aspire 8943G — a flat 7.0 subscore on the CPU and a solid 6.8 on both graphics and gaming.
Villman is selling this model for Php120,900USD 2,060INR 174,652EUR 1,962CNY 15,004 (comes with some freebies like a DLink router and Acer Optical mouse though that promo seems to have ended in December already).

Tigrrr says:
I wish it had Nvidia graphics instead, but I’m still considering buying one for my 3D graphics work.
Fleeb says:
This is not a laptop – I agree with Ben. This is a “desktop substitute”.
garz says:

120k? whew! magpapabili na lang ako sa US ng Alienware. At 120k I can buy two kick ass gaming laptops with muscle!
DigitalBinary says:
More laptops of this kind should be manufactured by different brands. I like to use this kind of a laptop that feels like the desktop PC that i had at home.
milanaorly says:
sira na backbone mo jan pag lagi mo dala. haah
Winziph says:
wow ang cool, pang gaming. sana maglabas na rin yung ASUS ng pangtapat dito, asus fan kasi ako.
Benchmark says:
Hehehe you will need a stroller to bring this baby :-)
Perhaps soon, laptop makers will make a laptop that uses lcd projectors… all you have to bring is a keyboad with build in projector…plus a white screen.
I love my acer! Go Acer!
x’s:
can’t imagine a 21″ laptop hehehehe

18.4 display!!! Is that legal for a laptop to have those kind of screen?!!! :)
Gumz says:
Hindi na kaya ng lap ko yan… kelangan na ng desk… ^_^
Gumz says:
@Benchmark
napaisip ako sa keyboard na lang… ^_^
Beny says:
Still not on par VALUE wise with the Asus G73JW or G53JW laptop
Fleeb says:
@Teknisyan: there’s no law against it so it’s definitely legal. :P
csseyah says:

Anonymous says:
i can buy 2or 3 allienware laptop wth that price.. or a mac and iphone ! so you choose
Eason says:
Nice indeed, but the Asus NX90 is still better for me.
Bryan says:
Wow.. That is indeed one heck of a huge laptop. I find the specs good but the price is just too much. I’d rather buy an alienware instead of this.
Jhay says:
For that price tag, I’d build a kick-ass gaming rig instead. One thing I dislike about laptops with huge screens is that you can’t position it for a more pleasurable viewing experience, because the screen is stuck with the keyboard/base.
And at 10 lbs?! A desktop would be more bang for the buck.
CarloBlogg Online 3.0 says:
wow, 18.4??? Definitely a desktop replacement. And at 10lbs., I think no one would even want to carry this around the house (or outside the house) :D
Grabe lahat ata sa laptop neto mabigat, pati price! :D
moses says:
I love and like that laptop you, even if it’s 10lbs,..exercise na yan pag dinala lagi sa office hahaha
jp says:
Mas maganda siguro ang Toshiba Qosmio dyan. Design pa lang panalo na :D
Gwapito says:
Grabe gid ini na laptop!
Joshua M says:
Ano gagawin ko dyan? bubuo nalang ako ng desktop
CarloBlogg Online 3.0 says:
@moses – haha, yeah i agree, tama ka dun – the extra-weight will definitely give you a nice workout to the office haha :D
laptop says:
Does this include a “web cam” ? Why not make windows 7 as “ultimate” with that price?
sanzjie says:
whoooo… sweet…
very nice and huge laptop…
but given it’s price, I’d rather build a custom rig with impressive specs as well. One advantage though, is that you can bring this beast anywhere, whenever you want
mpst says:
The screen size is a WOW for a “portable” or is it? But specs arent really that good though and for 120k I can get a way better lappy, please review the MSI gt680r featuring 2nd generation sandy bridge processors, SSDx2 or HDDx2 Raid 0, and a monster gpu.
mpst says:
Hi guys
I havent really seen “alienware” by Dell to be of substance in terms of hardware and price. Its more on bragging rights, but then again, it all boils down to performance, id still prefer top of the line MSI gt/gx gaming series or asus ROG gaming series, both of which priced under 100k if bought via amazon.com, the specs of both laptops can of course be matched by alienware but for a hefty price tag of 250k-300k (specs maxed).
j0 says:
Go for any laptop brand except Samsung..
Sigh nakakalungkot sana wag to mangyari sa iba

I’d still pick the Asus G73 over this crap.
gonkyouka says:
Kung gaanu ka laki ang laptop, ganun din ang price.
Pak-pipak says:
Oh my! Malaki na ang 6920g, mas malaki pa ang 8920g ngayon mas malaki nanaman ang 8943G. Mahirap ng dalhin ang ganyang laptop…

Okay na sana ito, palitan nalang yung DVB-T Digital tuner into ISDB-T Digital Tuner so it can work in the Philippines.
deuts says:
With this price, I wonder how it fares with the Fritz Chess Benchmark -> http://wp.me/pdsnx-ww
Rex Santos says:
What a Beast! What a hefty price! 120K good for 2 laptop n.
