MSI revealed their newest GUS here at CES. The Graphics Upgrade Solution (GUS) is an external enclosure for discrete graphics cards to complement a laptop or NUC and make it more gaming-ready.
This is not the first time that MSI created a GUS. Back in 2012, they also revealed a GUS II unit but it never came out of production. This time, it looks like they’ve got it right.
The MSI GUS comes in a sleek and compact metal enclosure that hooks up to your laptop or NUC via Thunderbolt 3. It has a built-in 80 Plus Gold 500W power supply unit that powers the latest AMD or NVidia graphics card you plug into it.
The unit also has two USB 3.0 Type-A and one Type-C on the rear side and there’s another USB Type 3.0 Type-C (supports Quick Charge 3.0) up front. With Thunderbolt 3.0 Plug-and-Play support, the MSI GUS should be able to connect to 3rd-party computers (the demo showed it is connected to an Intel NUC).
MSI did not provide details on the MSRP but expects to release it sometime in the second quarter 2017.
