Thought Google Fiber is the fastest internet service money can afford? Well, think again because So-Net Entertainment Corporation, a local ISP in Japan and a subsidiary of Sony Corporation has recently unveiled NURO, the world’s fastest home internet that’s twice the speed of what Google has to offer. From the network, it is distributed to offices and households through optical fiber which then passes through a device called ONU (Optical Network Unit) that converts the signal to broadband internet. It’s capable of an eye-popping downlink speed of 2Gbps with an upload speed of 1Gbps. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has released the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for the Konektadong Pinoy (KP) Act, a move expected to make internet services cheaper, faster, and more accessible nationwide. DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said the government is targeting at least a 40% drop in internet prices by 2026, which could boost the Philippines’ ranking in ASEAN for internet affordability. The new rules aim to simplify permits, speed up registration, and encourage more competition among internet providers, including foreign companies already planning to enter the Philippine market. Currently, basic internet plans cost ₱480 to ₱1,300, while premium packages can reach ₱10,000.
