The Philippine government has strengthened its efforts against fake news and AI-generated deepfakes, with three key agencies signing a new agreement to improve coordination. 11506, the Anti-Fake News and Disinformation Act. Notably, the bill expands the definition of “fake news” to include false information or disinformation that causes harm, such as inciting violence, hate, or public disorder. PPrevious bills addressing this issue either relied on the vague term “false fact” or defined fake news solely by the intent to deceive, without clearly distinguishing disinformation. Filipino journalists have launched a tool called FakeBlok that blocks articles from fake news sites on your Facebook newsfeed. FakeBlok is a project made in collaboration between the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility. It's a downloadable Chrome browser extension that grays out fake news sites on your Facebook feed. The tool also lets you submit sites that you think share fake news, for vetting by an independent group of journalists.
