Filipino journalists launch FakeBlok to fight fake news sites

Listen to article

Filipino journalists have launched a tool called FakeBlok that blocks articles from fake news sites on your Facebook newsfeed.

FakeBlok is a project made in collaboration between the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility. It’s a downloadable Chrome browser extension that grays out fake news sites on your Facebook feed. The tool also lets you submit sites that you think share fake news, for vetting by an independent group of journalists.

“Over the past months, unverified posts on social media have been intentionally spreading misinformation. Even state-run news agencies have come up with, shared, and legitimized fake news,” the NUJP said in a Facebook post. “We cannot believe everything that we read. We need to constantly question. We need to reclaim the truth. We need to reclaim our newsfeeds.”

You can download FakeBlok here.

And who decides what is fake news and what isn’t? Sounds like another step towards martial law to me. Never trust the mainstream media, even these so called journalists have their own agendas. Let the readers decide what they want to believe or not. Journalists should be reporting the news, not manipulating public opinion with their own brand of censorship.
