After incoming president Rodrigo Duterte warned our telecommunication companies that he will allow foreign entities to enter the Philippine market if our Internet services don't improve, Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) released separate statements supporting the call for a faster connection. "We support the call for faster internet. In fact, Globe is at the forefront of building the much needed infrastructure nationwide to make Internet services easily accessible either through mobile or wireline. This is supported by heavy investments over the years to make sure the Philippines is at par with other countries in terms of technology use." On the other hand, PLDT spokesman Ramon Isberto mentions that they are in the process of working on a program that aims to improve Internet services in the Philippines. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has released the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for the Konektadong Pinoy (KP) Act, a move expected to make internet services cheaper, faster, and more accessible nationwide. DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said the government is targeting at least a 40% drop in internet prices by 2026, which could boost the Philippines’ ranking in ASEAN for internet affordability. He added that the goal is not just lower prices but also better service quality and faster speeds for consumers.
