Intel has announced new variants of their 8th-gen processors, the U and Y series, designed for thin, light, and 2-in-1 laptops. The 8th-Gen Intel Core U-Series (Whiskey Lake) (i7-8565U, i5-8265U, i3-8145U) features an integrated Gigabit Wi-Fi with Intel Wireless AC paired with Intel LTE modem options, multiple voice support for Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana, and support for Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos. The 8th-Gen Intel Core Y-Series (Amber Lake) (i7-8500, i5-8200Y, m3-8100Y), on the other hand, comes with an Intel Wireless-AC, Modern Standby support, and eSIM support with Intel Gigabit LTE modems. The 8th-Gen Intel Core U and Y series will be available from PC manufacturers this coming Fall 2018. Unlike the old Intel x86 processors used in Macs before 2020, these chips would still be Apple-designed Arm-based silicon, with Intel acting only as a foundry while TSMC continues to handle the bulk of M-series production.
