The update extends an important security certificate that these services rely on. Apple confirmed the change in its release notes, saying the update ensures continued access to these services on supported older devices. iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 are available for a limited list of devices, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the sixth-generation iPod touch. These models are no longer eligible for modern iOS updates, making this release especially important for users who still rely on them. This update comes more than three years after the last iOS 12 release in January 2023. While the certificate does not expire until 2027, Apple recommends installing the update early to avoid future service issues and to help catch any lingering bugs. iPadOS will be getting interactive widgets, a new lock screen, and smarter PDF support in the newest iPadOS 17 update unveiled by Apple at their 2023 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
