The arrival of these wallets supports the Philippines’ move toward a cash-lite economy. Scan to Pay is integrated directly into banking apps and digital wallets, allowing customers to pay by simply scanning QR codes at participating merchants instead of using cash or cards. Visa says the system is designed for a mobile-first market, where more people are now using smartphones for shopping, bills, and daily payments. Surprisingly, very few people are using PLDT WeRoam -- a service which has practically been supplanted by SmartBro Mobile 3G. uMobile on the other hand, though an autonomous telco is still considered a Smart/PLDT property and their free ad-supported 3G services will certainly bump up their total numbers.
