On Wednesday, the Orbits and Astranis have collaborated to bring internet connectivity in remote areas in the Philippines through MicroGEO satellites which will cover up to 10 million users and 30,000 barangays. The collaboration will send out the first two satellites dedicated to the country through a program that is expected to generate USD 400 million in the next eight years. Jose Manuel Romualdez, the Philippine Ambassador to the United States, has named the first satellite "Agila" in an effort to promote innovation in technology and fortify international alliances. Globe has officially launched Starlink's satellite-to-mobile service in the Philippines after receiving approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), making it the first local telecom operator to commercially offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity in the country. It supports voice and video calls through supported apps, messaging apps, SMS, and basic navigation services using Starlink's low-Earth orbit satellites. According to Globe, the service works by allowing compatible LTE smartphones with an active Globe SIM to connect directly to Starlink satellites once they are outside Globe's terrestrial network coverage and have a clear view of the sky. The launch comes as the Philippines continues to face connectivity challenges due to its geography and frequent natural disasters.
