The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Meta have signed a new agreement to reduce online scams and fake news in the Philippines. Under the agreement, DICT and Meta promised to protect children online, block scammers, and stop the spread of deepfakes on social media. This includes child exploitation materials, fake investment schemes, phishing attacks, digital fraud, and other online scams. Some scam posts, such as offers for unlimited internet SIM cards and deals that seem too good to be true, can still be seen online. With more people shopping online, sending digital payments, and using social media, scammers are taking advantage by spreading AI-generated deepfakes, fake investment offers, and scam calls or messages posing as trusted individuals. Meta has rolled out new safety tools on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram to help older adults avoid online scams.
