The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Meta have signed a new agreement to reduce online scams and fake news in the Philippines. The partnership aims to make Facebook and other Meta platforms safer for Filipino users.
Under the agreement, DICT and Meta promised to protect children online, block scammers, and stop the spread of deepfakes on social media. The move comes as Filipinos remain among the top users of Facebook and YouTube worldwide. Because of this, officials say stronger online protection is needed.
Meta said it will improve its system to detect and remove harmful content faster. This includes child exploitation materials, fake investment schemes, phishing attacks, digital fraud, and other online scams. The changes will apply not only to Facebook, but also to Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads.
However, it is still unclear how Meta will fully carry out these promises. Some scam posts, such as offers for unlimited internet SIM cards and deals that seem too good to be true, can still be seen online. There are also AI-generated posts spreading false information that are not always removed, even after being reported.
With the 2028 national elections approaching and an Anti-Fake News Bill filed in Congress last year, many expect stronger action from Meta in the coming months.
