A joint project between Xiaomi and chipset-maker Leadcore that started back in 2014, the upcoming Pinecone mobile chipset is set to be announced before the month ends which is aimed to be used for future Xiaomi smartphones. Pinecone will allegedly be first seen powering the Mi 5c (aka Meri). As for its internals, the Pinecone octa-core CPU will be accompanied by 3GB of RAM and Android 7.1.1 if we're going by the reported Geekbench results. Going back to Xiaomi's Pinecone, the purpose of having their own chipset is so that the company can let go of Qualcomm and Mediatek in powering their devices and instead use Leadcore's cellular radio tech to keep costs low in the long term -- hopefully making their handsets more affordable for the consumers, too.
